The board

The old board hangs over the tables

Mel’s Country Cafe. Homestyle Cooking. White script, hand painted on red, bolted to the wall above the booths. Beside it, a couple of framed pictures of the gable it used to hang on.

We go by Mel’s. now, and the board stays exactly where it is. Under it there are red-edged tables, a chalk wall a sign painter did by hand, and a room that fills up on a Sunday morning.

Locally owned, in our own words. And to a customer who had been in twice by May, “a unique, family-owned restaurant.”

What comes out of the kitchen

Breakfast all day, and a plate lunch that needs a box

No printed menu on here, because the one online isn’t ours and we’d rather not have you turn up holding somebody else’s prices. What follows is what people actually order, and what came out on the plate.

  1. 01

    Country fried steak and eggs

Sausage gravy over the top, hash browns, a biscuit and two eggs.

  2. 02

    The sampler breakfast

Jason had it in August with a small side of biscuits and gravy. Five stars, and the words were “fantastic meal.”

  3. 03

    Omelettes and hash browns

Browned off on the flat top, not steamed.

  4. 04

    Ham steak, scrambled eggs, pancakes

The whole table's worth, if there are a few of you.

  5. 05

    Fried chicken

Becky's words in March: “that fried chicken is a winner.”

  6. 06

    Roast beef and gravy

Mashed potatoes, coleslaw and mac and cheese around it.

  7. 07

    Breaded pork tenderloin

    On a bun, with fries.

  8. 08

    Sandwiches

Collin recommends the sourdough as the bread option.

  9. 09

    The house special

Collin again, in June: “The house special was a lot of food for the price.”

  10. 10

    Burgers and fries

The wall by the booths says homemade, and best in town. We painted it.

“It is hard to find beef for breakfast in Jeff, so I go out of my way to come here.”krshanks, June 2026

“Home town vibes with quite a few seniors and locals here for breakfast.”

The room

A chalk wall, red tables and a fair bit of noise

Somebody stood on a ladder and lettered that whole wall by hand. Cheeseburger, fresh food, french fries, and a burger the size of the booth. It is the first thing you see and it is the reason people photograph the place.

High-backed booths, red-edged tables, the placemats every business in town seems to be on, and a couple of screens showing whatever is on. There is outdoor seating when the weather is behaving, and a private dining room off the main floor.

Nights and bookings

The room does more than breakfast

Thursday evening we open back up at five for live music. There is karaoke, a private dining room, an outdoor space, and the whole event space can be rented out.

Live music on Thursdays

The kitchen opens back up 5 PM to 8 PM. It is the one evening on our hours, and it is on the banner in the window.

Karaoke nights

On the list of what we do, in our own words. Call to ask which night it is running.

Private dining room

Off the main floor, for a group that wants its own four walls.

Outdoor space

Outdoor seating, and part of the indoor and outdoor space we hire out.

Event space for rent

Our own line, word for word: our event space is available for rental.

Big groups welcome

A family reunion came in July and the review said the smoothest service they had ever had with a large group.

I had the sampler breakfast with a small side of biscuits and gravy. Fantastic meal

Jason Snider/August 2026

This was our first visit to Mel’s and it definitely won’t be our last. An instant favorite with delicious food, great service, and really affordable prices.

April Langley/June 2026

We all ordered something different and everything was awesome. Personally, recommend doing sourdough as the bread option for the sandwiches. The house special was a lot of food for the price.

Collin Cotterell/June 2026

It has a great local feel that makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door. Everything I ordered came out hot, tasted delicious, and felt like a nice home-cooked meal rather than standard restaurant food.

Fleuriane Joire/June 2026

My favorite spot for great fried chicken. All food platters look great. But that fried chicken is a winner. Entire staff is professional and friendly.

Becky Bixby/March 2026

We had a large group come eat after a family reunion and we had the smoothest service I have ever had with a large group. The food was great, fast, and the service was impeccable.
